Impact on your insurance
While the DMV does not automatically inform your insurer of points assessed against your license for traffic convictions, it provides information concerning your license to your insurer upon request. Insurers may request information as to the status of your license when your policy enters its renewal period, when you are involved in an accident, or when you seek to modify your policy.
The impact of a traffic conviction varies by insurer, depending on the formula they use to evaluate how much of a risk you are to insure. Other factors such as age and city or county of residence are also considered. However, it is clear that a conviction for a traffic offense can greatly increase your premium. If prior to your conviction you enjoyed a good driver discount, the loss of that discount can by itself add 10%, 20% or more onto your premium.
If you hold a CDL, conviction of a traffic offense can increase not only your personal insurance policy, but your work policy as well, making you more expensive to insure and employ.
